Founded in 1946 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Lake Superior State University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and offers a variety of unique degree programs. The university’s fire science program was the first program to become internationally accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress.
Lake Superior State University has partnered with The College Network, Inc. to provide learners more flexibility in pursuing their degrees online. Use The College Network’s Comprehensive Learning Module (CLM) program to earn college credit (“test out”) for general education and elective courses by passing end-of-course college equivalency exams (up to 68 credits)—and save time and money. CLMs are available online and enable learners to work at an independent pace. Learners then complete their degree programs with Lake Superior State University.

Bachelor of Science in Fire Science The bachelor’s degree in fire science provides learners with the necessary certifications to enter the fire service. It also provides learners with an education background necessary for advancement to higher ranks and supervisory levels. Learners in this program will matriculate through the Fire Science Generalist track and will be prepared for careers in the area of fire protection, education, fire equipment service/supply, and emergency planning. For those pursuing work in a career fire department, a minor in paramedic technology is strongly recommended. Others may select a minor such as management, computer technology, public administration, environmental science, or another area that is more applicable to their own career aspirations.
